Reason #4 to Attend a Beyond the Snapshot Workshop

Reason #4: Because years from now, words just won’t do this moment justice.

One of the magical things about photography is it’s ability to encapsulate a moment forever. The image is cute at the time we capture it, but its value grows as the years pass. Twenty years from now I can tell all the stories I want about my girls, but it’s the photos like these that will tell the real story with more color and impact that I could ever muster.

The images have impact because of the content, of course, but partially they speak to us because of the technique involved to create them. Simple things like lens choice and composition take it from tasteless to delicious! It just so happens that these things are taught in the Beyond the Snapshot workshop.  Join us – register now!

Reason #3 to Attend a Beyond the Snapshot Workshop

Reason #3: Because great portraits can happen at anytime.

I’m  a big believer that some of the best portraits happen right in the middle of life, not when we’re all prettied up and sitting in front of the camera. These “caught portraits” as I call them, happen all the time when we’re engaged with life and not paying attention to the camera. We’re being ourselves, which just happens to be the time when we look our best. The portraits below are great examples of that. They weren’t orchestrated or contrived. They’re both just cases of life happening in front of me and I happened to have a camera and a few skills to capture it.

What caught portraits could you be creating if you gained a little more skill with your camera? Come and join us at a Beyond the Snapshot workshop and find out!

Reason #2 to Attend a Beyond the Snapshot Workshop

Reason #2: Fall is the best time of year for photography.

Fall is my favorite season. When the nights turn cool and hints of color creep into the trees, I start feeling nostalgic and homey, like when you put on that old comfy sweatshirt that you haven’t worn since March. It’s also my favorite time for photography, particularly nature and landscape photography, for obvious and not-so-obvious reasons. The colors are simply stunning, but it’s also a great time because it’s cooler, there are fewer bugs, and there’s usually fewer people out at the parks, trails, and campgrounds.

For photographers, the fall season opens up new opportunities for amazing photos. Scenes that are dull in July can turn spectacular in September and October. The changing weather can add some dramatic clouds and wind to the scene too. Those things are particularly nice for beginning photographers because they make it easier to create photos with high impact, and if one learns some new skills and a few tricks, the opportunities become even more amazing. So if there’s any time to learn a few new things about your camera and picture taking, now is the time! Come and join us!

Reason #1 To Attend a Beyond the Snapshot Workshop

Reason #1: Because capturing your kids personalities and quirks is priceless!

When I’m hanging out with my kids in a place like a state park, I purposefully like to let them go and explore. It’s great for them because they can really put their imagination to work, but it also gives me a chance to take some photos of the “real them.” Granted, having them sit on the picnic table and give the camera a cheesy grin has it’s value, but for me there’s something priceless about those shots I’m able to grab of them just being them.

Right now Nissa has a fascination with sticks and rocks. She love to collect rocks (usually gravel) and sticks to use for all sorts of fun and mischief. These shots capture that part of her personality right now, and I love that. In the years to come, I think she’ll love it too.

Photographically speaking, the photos below aren’t anything amazing, but it still took a small bit of skill and technique to make these more than just “point and shoot.” Maybe it’s the composition, the lens choice, or the perspective, but they’re keepers to me, and their more than snapshots. That’s what I mean when I say, “Beyond the Snapshot,” and being able to capture photos like these is a great benefit of attending a workshop.

Announcement: Beyond the Snapshot Workshop Scheduled!

The Beyond the Snapshot Workshop has been scheduled for Saturday October 15th from 9am to Noon. This workshop is for anyone interested in doing more than just setting their camera on automatic and pushing the button. If you’ve ever wanted to take more control of your camera, or if you’ve ever wanted to learn how to shoot photos with more impact and POP, then this workshop is for you!

We’ll cover some fundamental photography topics like basic lighting, getting better exposures, basics about shutter speed and aperture and how to use them to your advantage, composition, and more. If that all sounds really technical and overwhelming, don’t worry. I’m going to make it all simple and easy to understand.

I’ll also have plenty of easy tips and tricks to give your photos more POP right away. It’s going to a fun lively discussion, and you should come ready to shoot photos and ask plenty of questions. Class size is limited, so register soon!

The workshop cost is $49, but you can bring a friend for just $20 more! Sign up today!
